Payette National Forest
Planning a summer horseback riding trip to Idaho? Be sure to ride in Valley and Idaho
Counties. Every trail leads to a Creek, River or lake, water is always available. The
trails vary dramatically, study the trail maps and choose carefully. Consider the
ability of you and your horse. Some trails allow atv's so if your horse is spooky avoid
those. The views are breathtaking and the fishing is always great. Camping with your
horse is generally not a problem. Bring mosquito repellent, fishing gear and a camera to
capture all the wildlife along the trail. Lightening storms are not uncommon in the area,
be sure to include rain gear in your saddlebags. Both counties are old gold mining areas
so you will see old grave sites. log cabins and some remaining artifacts. Indians hunted
and fished both areas extensevely. Arrorwheads are commonly found at various Indian camp
sites but please, leave them where you find them so the next rider can share the
excitement of seeing them. Panning for gold may still be an option. Motel accomedations
and horse stables are readly avaible if you don't want to rough it. Contact the Payette
National Forest in Valley County, McCall, Idaho at 208-634-0700 or visit their web site

Pottersfield (Horse Boarding and Breaking)
Pottersfield: We have a ten acre ranch set up to accomodate up to twenty horses with
more paddocks and barns being added this spring. This is a complete horse facility.
We are close to hundreds of miles of trails on forest service land. We have two
r.v. hook ups and camping spots available. We are close to lake Pend Orielle and
the Clark Fork river for great fishing and are surrounded by some of the best
hunting areas in the state. We are only six miles from a town with groceries and
gas and there is a wonderful lodge just two miles from us for those who want a
little more comfort.
The closest big town would be Sandpoint Idaho which is about thirty miles from us. Take
highway 200 east out of Sandpoint to Clark Fork. Take a right at the Conoco.
Go about seven miles out River Rd. We are on the right. The sign says
Pottersfield (Horse Boarding and Breaking). Our phone number is 208-266-0330
