Mt. Rushmore KOA, Dakota Badland Outfitters, Inc.
We have two trail ride concessions in the Black Hills that offer 1-8 hour rides. One is located 1/2 a mile south of Crazy Horse Memorial and all trails are in the Black Hills National Forest/ The Buck Horn Mt. range. The second facility is located at the Mt. Rushmore KOA. Here we have 1, 2, and 4 hour rides in the Norbeck Wilderness area. We also have a all day ride to Harney Peak, which is located in the Black Elk wilderness area. We also offer a 3 hour breakfast ride.
For folks who travel with their own horses or mules we have individual or group rental pens located on the KOA campground which allows access to the Harney Peak trail system.
Certified hay is not required when over nighting on the KOA premises. We built a beautiful 50 horse stable in 2000 at the KOA and the rental pens are brand new as well. We have 20 10X10 "individual pens" that are elevated on high ground with a parking lot for horse trailers and hitch rails for saddling. The group pens are 20X30 and will hold up to 5 - 8 horses.
The one thing that is no longer offered is the renting of portable pens from the KOA to set up at Willow Creek. We do not sell hay either.

Facility consists of an open field along the hwy leading over O'neil pass. ground is fairly level and easily accessed. There are a few falling apart corrals, water, and a porta potty. what makes this area so pleasant, is its high altitude, fantastic trails, mostly snowmobile trails, and the very friendly peole who are the hosts. they have a restaurant, and some nice lodging across the road, and I think, with more summer business, they might do something to imrove the corrals, but you are free to set up your own. I highly recommend this area, always one of our favorites.
O"Neil Pass is in the northwestern part of the Black Hills, west of Lead. The easy way to get there is to take I-90 to Spearfish, drop south on 14 to 85, and 85 west, over O'Neil Pass. A little west of the summit, you will see Trail's Head Lodge, combination gas, restaurant, and A=frames on the right. Go in, and the owners will direct you where to camp. There are many miles of trails in this area, utilizing both snowmobile trails, logging roads, and forest service roads, plus two excellent cross country ski trail systems that make great horse trails. Best of all, the altitude is high, which makes it the area of choice, when the temperatures heat up. This is true of that whole section of the Hills, from Deerfield north.

Bittersweet Ranch and Camp
Hill City: A new horse camp in Hill City. The riding was just perfect. We were able to ride thru high plains and then into the forest with pines dripping with moss. There was lots of water on the trail for the horses so this was not a concern. His provided us with pens, water for us and the horses, and a port-a-pot.
He will have a shower house done shortly as it is already under construction. He allowed us to use electric fences for those that didn't want to use the pens. You were able to ride right out the back and with a forest service map would have no problems getting around. The wild flowers were breathtaking.

Directions to the ranch:
West bound from Hill City on Deerfield Road Hwy 17
Drive 10 miles until you get to Hwy 308
Take a right turn on Slate Prairie Road
Cross Cattleguard onto a gravel road
1 1/2 miles on the right, look for BitterSweet Camp Sign.

Murdo Rodeo Grounds
Murdo, SD has a nice rodeo grounds on the north end of town that we overnighted at on our way to the Black Hills. The guy that came out told us to help ourselves to what we needed - water, lights, whatever. He was very nice and fun to visit with. This has been a few years ago that we were there and at that time we didn't have to pay anything but it may have changed by now.
