Big Creek Horse Camp
Newport: Big Creek Horse Camp is a privately operated horse campground just outside the Big Creek entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Mt Sterling, NC. We operate 2 small horse camps, one has a dozen tie stalls, the other has high lines. Both sites have turn out for your horses, pit toilets, and a covered picnic shed. A nearby country store (in walking or riding distance) offers hot meals, hot showers, and laundry. From the camp you may easily ride into both the Big Creek/Mt Sterling area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or into the 12 Mile Strip area of the Pisgah National Forest.
The camp is rented to a single group at a time, regardless of group size.
Rates are $10 per night for the first person and $5 per night for each additional person.
For folks with big rigs than cannot negotiate the road to the Big Creek day use trailer parking area in the national park may park at our horse camp for $5 rig per day.
Big Creek Horse Camp is just 2 miles off I-40 exit 451 in Tennessee. The closest large town is Newport, TN.
We live in NC but you have to go into TN to get to our place and, even though we live in NC, our mail and phone service comes from Newport, TN, a town about 20 miles away.

The road is very narrow going into the campground. Clearing the one lane bridge that sets on a curve just past the Ranger Station meant getting our right front truck wheel right along the ditch to swing our 30 foot trailer in without hitting the bridge.

Update from Mike Kinsey Oct 30 2011:
The campground sites were unoccupied in October 2011 other than ours. These are back into sites.
The "stalls" where horses are required to be kept when not riding are pretty safe and substantial.
If a driver doesn’t "back", there one lane roads and campsites aren’t for you.
We drove the local road to the Cataloochee campsites in our truck. Not a road for trailers.
No way, no how. A two horse trailer might be able to navigate the turns on the back road but it would be a trick. Coming in off I-40 is challenging enough.
Don’t trailer the back road between the two sites.

There is just the one "loop" out of the Big Creek Campground, my GPS showed it to be exactly 17 miles.
We rodethe dirt road past the ranger station, then left up the road up to the Appalachian trail.
It is a climb that only gets steeper once one gets on the trail itself for the first 9 miles.
It is very rocky so shoeless aka “natural” isn’t even a fair consideration.
Normally we do some trotting along longer trails, but this one was just too rocky. The views are absolutely stunning and beautiful.
For novice horsemen and women, regardless of the number decades riding, if one does not have control of their horse much of the trail is just wide enough for the horse and one step to off the trail can mean a few hundred feet fall.

Starr Mountain Lost Corral Horse Camp
Benton: A new horse camp is open in the Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger District of the Cherokee National Forest. Lost Corral Horse Camp is located in Polk County off Forest Service Road 27 near the Hiwassee Ocoee Scenic River State Parks Office.
Lost Corral features 20 developed campsites, each with its own picnic table, fire ring, lantern post and horse hitching area. Each site will accommodate up to five people and two vehicles. Portable water and vault toilet facilities are located in the campground. The fee for camping is $15 per site per day.

Ocoee-Hiwassee District Ranger, Monte Williams said, "This is a nice facility and we are pleased to make it available to equestrian users."
Lost Corral Horse Camp is near the Starr Mountain Horse Tail Complex, Gee Creek Wilderness, Spring Creek Shooting Range and Hiwassee River. "Lost Corral is in a great location near a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities," said Williams.

The Starr Mountain Horse Trail Complex consists of over 30 miles of trails ranging from short loop trails to long overnight rides. The trail complex can be accessed directly from the Lost Corral Horse Camp and Trailhead via the Coffee Branch Trail No. 105, 7.9 miles to Iron Gap. This trail presents a moderate challenge due to the grade and rocky condition of the old roadbed. Combined with the Chestnut Mountain Trail No. 104, 3.8 miles, horseback riders can make a loop back to Lost Corral through Gee Creek Wilderness.

For additional information about Lost Corral Horse Camp, contact the Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger District at (423) 338-3300.

Lost Corral Horse Camp is located off Highway 411, seven miles north of the traffic light in Ocoee Scenic River State Park sign marking the turn. After turning onto Spring Creek Road, Lost Corral is just past the State Parks Office and across the road from Gee Creek State Park.
