James River State Park
It is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains, just east of the James River. It is a little over 2 hours west of
Richmond off Route 60. It is primitive camping(no water/ electric at sites).
There is water at several locations thru the park. Approximately 20 miles of
trails varied in terrain. Some flat and along the river, others more hilly,
some single track and some are lightly graveled access roads. I am fairly
timid as a trail rider(kind of new to it) and only found a few spots that
were a bit steep for my taste.
There is a group site that can hold 36 horse
/rider pairs. At this site you can picket, quick corral or they have a shed
row barn with 7 stalls. There are also some individual sites where you can
have your horse and there are 4 stalls in that area. The park info can be
accessed thru the Virginia State Parks web site or the phone # is
434-933-4355.
